Gospel legend Yaw Sarpong has passed away

Yaw Sarpong, a legendary gospel musician from Ghana who founded the renowned Asomafo group, has passed away.

His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, verified the heartbreaking news in an article published by MyJoyOnline.com on Tuesday, January 2, 2025.

The family and pertinent authorities have not yet formally revealed any additional information about the circumstances surrounding his death, including the precise cause.

His departure occurs somewhat more than a month after Maame Tiwaa, a cherished backing vocalist and vital member of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, passed away in early December 2025 following a brief illness.

The gospel community had already been severely impacted by that tragedy, and the seasoned performer was said to have suffered greatly emotionally.

Legendary Gospel Artiste Yaw Sarpong

Yaw Sarpong has been dealing with health issues for a number of years, which caused him to occasionally take time off from public appearances in order to concentrate on his recuperation and treatment.

His impact on Ghanaian gospel music persisted despite these obstacles. As the leader of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, Yaw Sarpong gained national recognition and is widely recognized as one of the most important individuals in the history of Ghana’s gospel scene.

The group’s powerful lyrical content, disciplined musical approach, and strong Christian theology origins revolutionized contemporary Akan gospel music.

Over the years, the group created timeless songs including “Wo Haw Ne Hwan,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa,” which are still played in churches and homes across the nation.

Yaw Sarpong received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025 in honor of his enormous contributions to gospel music and Ghanaian culture.
