Ghana bleeds when the New Patriotic Party is divided – Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Efutu, has urged unity among the party’s presidential candidates, stressing that internal differences hurt the country as well as the NPP.

Speaking on Thursday, January 22, 2026, during the signing of a peace agreement by five candidates in advance of the NPP presidential primaries on January 31, Mr. Afenyo-Markin advised the candidates to concentrate on a campaign that is motivated by unity, ideas, and vision.

“Whenever the NPP is united, it is formidable; whenever it is divided, it bleeds and Ghana pays the price,” he stated.

He went on to say that unity is more than just words and that it is a conscious practice.

“Unity is conduct. It is the discipline of disagreeing without destroying one another,” Mr Afenyo-Markin added, while appealing to all aspirants to maintain decorum throughout the campaign period.

The Efutu MP reminded the candidates of their responsibility to promote a serious and mature competition.

“Before January 31, your responsibility, my dear aspirants, is to campaign on ideas, record, and vision—not on insults, threats, and division,” he said.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need of true devotion to the peace accord and cautioned that its goals would be compromised if it were not put into practice.

“A peace pact that ends with signatures, but not with changed behavior, is a betrayal of this moment and of Ghana,” he cautioned, urging the signatories to honour their commitments.

The Minority Leader called for a rejuvenated NPP in his closing comments.

“Ghana needs the NPP back, not as a wounded, quarrelling organization, but as a renewed, united, and serious alternative,” he added.
