GTA is advised to turn Abonse’s slave market into a tourism destination

Okley Solomon, a radio host and tourism curator in Koforidua, has urged the Ghana Tourism Authority to transform the Abonse slave market site in the Okere District of the Eastern Region into a fully recognized tourist destination.

He emphasized the need for tourism in the area to be taken more seriously while reporting on the 2025 Detty December events in the area on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z.

The location, which was formerly a slave market, has the potential to become a significant tourist attraction for the nation, Okley Solomon told host Kwame Dadzie.

“This area has a slave market. It’s known as the Abonse Slave Market. According to the information I have, the University of Ghana’s archaeology department visited the location to do research and confirmed that it was, in fact, a slave market since they collected the shackles and other evidence for their department in Accra,” he stated.

As a result, the broadcaster, also known as Jah Solo, warned the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to take notice of the website.

He declared, “Let them do the same for Abonse as they did for the Assin Manso Slave Market.”

The Guan-speaking settlement of Abonse is situated close to the borders of Shai Osudoku, Adukrom, and Asesieso.

Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, who was also present on the show, stated that the government is still dedicated to producing and marketing more travel-related goods throughout the nation.
