A 53-year-old Ghanaian immigrant, George Ennin, was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked attack while walking to work in the Bronx, leaving his family and community in shock.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, around 2 p.m. local time, in the Melrose section of the Bronx near Third Avenue and East 157th Street.
According to reports, surveillance footage captured the assailant attempting to kick Ennin, who blocked the attack but stumbled and fell due to uneven pavement. The suspect then charged at him, grabbed his arm, and stabbed him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Ennin, despite his injuries, managed to walk approximately 29 steps down the sidewalk before collapsing. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Ennin, a father of two college-bound daughters whom he raised single-handedly, had recently returned from a month-long visit to Ghana. Described by neighbors as a hardworking and respectful individual, he had progressed from working at a supermarket to his role as a security guard.
The attack happened in broad daylight, heightening fears in the local community, with tributes pouring in for Ennin’s friendly demeanor and the tragic senselessness of the violence.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Sean Jones from the Bronx, was arrested the following day on January 6, 2026. He has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities confirmed that Jones had no known connection to Ennin and possesses a criminal history with over 20 prior arrests. He was scheduled to appear in court on January 7, 2026.
