Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has maintained that the party’s 2024 election results demonstrate the critical need for a presidential candidate who can unite the base and convert parliamentary strength into presidential support.
With just two weeks until the NPP’s January 31 presidential primaries, Dr. Acheampong addressed party supporters on Friday during a campaign visit to the Ningo-Prampram constituency.
He cited voting trends from the 2024 elections as proof of a widening gap between the party’s parliamentary and presidential outcomes.
He claims that in a number of regions, NPP parliamentary candidates performed significantly better than the party’s presidential candidate, raising questions about voter confidence at the top of the ticket.
“In many parts of the country, our parliamentary candidates performed significantly better than our presidential candidate,” he said.
“Across constituencies, the difference was about 30,000 votes. In the Upper East Region alone, the gap was close to 40,000 votes.”
According to Dr. Acheampong, the issue was especially noticeable in the Savannah Region, where the NPP received more parliamentary votes than presidential ones in each of the seven constituencies.
“If you take the seven constituencies in the Savannah Region together, our parliamentary candidates beat our presidential candidate by about 17,000 votes,” he stated.
He specifically mentioned Damongo, citing the performance of the local NPP parliamentary candidate, Samuel Abu Jinapor.
“In Damongo, Abu Jinapor beat our presidential candidate by about 4,000 votes,” Dr Acheampong said.
“That means 4,000 people voted for the NPP parliamentary candidate, but when it came to our presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, they walked away.”
These numbers, according to Dr. Acheampong, highlight the necessity for a presidential candidate who can unite the party’s grassroots support and turn parliamentary allegiance into presidential votes.
In anticipation of the 2028 general elections, the NPP will choose its presidential candidate on January 31.
