Man sentenced to 30 years in prison for a 2022 goldmine robbery

The Bekwai Circuit Court sentenced a 30-year-old man to 30 years in prison with hard labor for his involvement in an armed robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso, Ashanti South Region, in 2022.

Dominic Ofori, also known as Fanta, was apprehended on February 16, 2026, after nearly four years of escaping capture. He pleaded guilty to robbery in violation of Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29) and was sentenced to 30 years in jail with hard labor.

The event occurred on March 20, 2022, when the Manso Adubia District Police Command received credible information that a gang of armed persons from Manso Abodom planned to loot a mining site in Manso Akwasiso of gold concentrate belonging to the owner.

Following the tip, the police launched a surveillance operation and set up an ambush at the place. At about 5:30 p.m. that day, four armed men arrived, fired randomly to terrify the miners, and then robbed them of the gold concentrate.

The police intervention squad engaged the suspects in a gunfight. Three of the thieves, Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi, were shot during the exchange of fire and pronounced dead at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum.

Dominic Ofori managed to flee at the time, but he remained on the run until his arrest earlier this year.

In a publication dated Monday, March 2, 2026, the Police Service underlined its unshakable commitment to combating violent crime and bringing culprits to justice.

The police promised the public that efforts to rid neighborhoods of armed robbery and other major crimes would continue without interruption.
